A three-year apprenticeship with master craftsman, P.A. ("Pug") Moore (Rocky Mt., NC), deeply influenced my development as a furniture maker and designer. As it is the privilege for a music student to study classical works alongside a maestro, working alongside Mr. Moore, I was immersed into the classical period of furniture design: the eighteenth century. He shared with me the subtle distinctions that separate the great works from those that are merely good. During his eight years as a furniture maker in North Carolina, McLaughlin's emphasis on traditional joinery, finish technique, and design led to his work being acquired by notable museums including Tryon Palace and Historic Hope Plantation. Having recently relocated his shop and family to Canterbury, NH, McLaughlin now designs/builds furniture on commission primarily for clients along the East Coast.
