European and Circassian walnut and
prima vera veneers, pau ferro, nickel silver
16" deep x 28" wide x 46" high
This low cabinet is cloaked in a tapestry
of rich exotic walnut. Amazing in figure
and pattern, the pieces were discovered in
a long-held cache of rare, old veneers.
Composing with them was a rewarding
process. The stand, of pau ferro, completes
the reference to Ming Dynasty forms.
The nickel silver escutcheon plate, the central
focus of the piece, is hand-engraved in the
style of Italian gunsmithing and Japanese
sword artistry. I have been engraving in metal
for years; incorporating this element into
my furniture allows me to add a further level
of detail to my shop-made hardware.
"When engraving, the sense of time
is lost, and the most minute detail
becomes the sole focus of attention."
